The big peacock problem is a famous conundrum in mathematics and logic, first proposed by the great logician Charles Dodgson (a.k.a. Lewis Carroll) in 1879. The problem goes like this:

There are 100 ducks in a line, each duck facing either north or south. At the head of the line is a big peacock, facing north. Behind the peacock are 99 ducks, all facing north. Suddenly, the peacock opens its tail feathers and blocks the view of all the ducks behind it. How many ducks are now facing south?

There is no definitive answer to this problem, as there are a number of valid ways to interpret it. However, the most common interpretation is that when the peacock opens its tail feathers, exactly 50 ducks will be facing south (and 50 will be facing north). This is because each duck behind the peacock will be blocked from view by the tail feathers, and so will effectively be facing the opposite direction. Therefore, if the peacock is facing north, half of the ducks behind it will be facing south; and if the peacock is facing south, half of the ducks behind it will be facing north.

It should be noted that this problem can also be interpreted in a number of other ways, all of which are equally valid. For instance, one could argue that when the peacock opens its tail feathers, exactly 51 ducks will be facing south (and 49 will be facing north). This is because each duck behind the peacock will be blocked from view by the tail feathers, and so will effectively be facing the opposite direction. However, since the peacock is facing north, the ducks behind it will also be facing north; and so the total number of ducks facing south will be 51.

Introduce the problem of peacocks in urban areas

As cities continue to grow and expand, the problem of peacocks in urban areas has become increasingly prevalent. In many cases, these birds are seen as a nuisance, as they can be quite loud and destructive. In addition, their droppings can carry diseases that can be harmful to humans. As a result, many city dwellers have called for stricter regulations on peacocks, or even for their outright banishment.

There are a number of ways to deal with the problem of peacocks in urban areas. One option is to have them relocated to more rural areas, where they will be less of a nuisance. Another option is to put them into zoos or other enclosed spaces where they can be better monitored. And yet another option is to simply kill them. Whichever option is chosen, it is clear that the problem of peacocks in urban areas is not going away anytime soon. Until a more permanent solution can be found, cities will continue to struggle with how to deal with these birds.
